Know Your Enemy: Corpus Christi FC

The Richmond Kickers head to Texas on Saturday looking to halt a difficult stretch of form when they face expansion side Corpus Christi FC for the first time.
Richmond has gone four matches without a win, beginning with a 5-0 defeat at Chattanooga on May 27. Since then, the Kickers have surrendered a two-goal lead in a draw against AC Boise before suffering losses to Loudoun United and Boise. Wednesday's defeat was particularly frustrating, as Richmond played the entire second half with a man advantage but could not erase an early two-goal deficit.
Their next opponent has endured plenty of struggles of its own.
Led by former USL League One player turned head coach Éamon Zayed, Corpus Christi spent much of its inaugural season at the bottom of the table before finally earning its first league victory on June 3. The 3-2 win over Portland Hearts of Pine was as dramatic as it was important.
Trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage time, Corpus Christi completed a stunning comeback thanks to an own goal credited to Portland goalkeeper Hunter Morse before defender Sam Roscoe found the winner moments later.
For a club still searching for consistency, it was exactly the kind of chaotic result that can change the mood around a season. It also serves as a reminder that, despite their place in the standings, Corpus Christi is capable of making life difficult for anyone on the right night.
Here's who Richmond fans should keep an eye on from the Corpus Christi squad this weekend.
Blake Bowen, Wingback/Midfielder #2
It wouldn't be an Éamon Zayed squad without a wingback reinvented as an attacking threat, and the 25-year-old Bowen has filled that role perfectly this season. He leads Corpus Christi in goals, shots and chances created, while ranking second in assists.
After adding former Tormenta player and USL Championship veteran Shanon Gómez, Zayed gained the flexibility to push Bowen further up the field into left midfield and attacking midfield roles. The move has paid off, with three of Bowen's goals coming from those advanced positions.
Bowen has shown he can score from a variety of angles, whether cutting inside and firing from the edge of the box or creating space for himself in tighter areas. His performances have largely flown under the radar due to Corpus Christi's place in the standings, but he remains one of the most dangerous players Richmond will face on Saturday.
Bubu Medina, Midfielder #26
Joining initially on a 25-day contract before earning a full-season deal, Medina quickly proved his value to the professional side after starring for Corpus Christi in USL League Two. The midfielder scored two goals in his first three appearances and has since become a useful piece for a team still searching for consistency in its inaugural season.
Part of Medina's value comes from his versatility. As Zayed continues to fine-tune his squad, Medina has filled multiple roles across the midfield, providing both defensive stability and attacking contributions when needed.
In recent matches, he has primarily featured in defensive and central midfield roles within a 4-1-4-1 setup. The system allows Corpus Christi to take advantage of Medina's range of passing, particularly his ability to switch play and pick out runners from deeper positions, while still giving him opportunities to influence the attack.
Medina's rise is also one of the better stories from Corpus Christi's inaugural season. While many expansion clubs look outside the organization for talent, Medina earned his opportunity after impressing with the club's USL League Two side and has made the jump look seamless. His early performances helped validate the pathway from the amateur and pre-professional ranks into the professional squad.
Nacho Abeal, Forward #21
Like Medina, Nacho Abeal is another player who successfully made the jump from Corpus Christi's USL League Two side to the professional ranks. The forward impressed before the club's move to USL League One and has continued to play an important role during its inaugural season.
Abeal currently leads Corpus Christi with three assists, an impressive return considering he has created just five chances. His versatility has also made him a valuable asset for coach Zayed, with appearances on both wings, at attacking midfield and even as a striker.
While he is still searching for his first regular-season goal, Abeal has been anything but passive in the attack. His 10 shots rank among the team's leaders and suggest that a breakthrough may not be far away.
For Richmond, the challenge will be identifying where Abeal lines up before kickoff. His role has changed throughout the season, and his tendency to drift into different attacking spaces can create difficult matchup decisions for opposing defenses.
Alexis Cerritos, Forward #10
Despite being just 25 years old, Cerritos is already in his eighth season across USL Championship and USL League One. Like several players on Corpus Christi's inaugural roster, finding the best way to maximize his talents has been an ongoing process. Six of his 11 league appearances have come as a substitute, but he has shown he can make an impact regardless of role.
Cerritos has recorded one goal and one assist so far this season, though his equalizer against Fort Wayne on May 21 offered a reminder of his quality. Entering the match off the bench, he needed less than two minutes to find the back of the net (assisted by Abeal).
With Christian Chaney appearing to be sidelined indefinitely, Cerritos could see an expanded role in the weeks ahead. Whether starting or coming off the bench, he brings experience and attacking instincts to a forward group that also includes Medina, Abeal and Jake Keegan. Players with his track record rarely stay quiet forever.
